Disgaea 3

I was hunting around for a new RPG to play and came across Disgaea 3 for $89 bucks on PS3. I have seen the series but never picked up a copy. Im strongly edging towards getting it but i want to try and save myself the money if i get home and don't like it because i can't return it if i do.
I know that everyone has their own preference when it comes to RPGs but i would like to hear your opinion anyhow. So, is it (or the series) good or not?

As the reviewer of the PSP port on this site and owner of Disgaea 2 on PS2 I will warn you now, the series is not for beginners. Disgaea is the definition of a niche series, and it is becoming apparent with Disgaea 3 that the series is very stuck in its roots. While you'll pack hundreds (literally) of hours into your save file, it is hard to tell the difference between games. Disgaea 3 is probably the best game since they have added a couple new throwing mechanics and I'm a sucker for Japanese high school stories, but if you can find one of the PS2 games (or even the PSP port of Disgaea 1) you probably wont need to look at picking up the third.

So in saying that, is it a series that needs to be followed through from the first to the last or there really is no deffining story between the series and can be picked up anywhere?
I'm Just a sucker for JRPGs fullstop..damn you Hironobu Sakaguchi. Sorry i didnt mean it! You are god!

The stories are all self contained, each taking place in a separate universe. Although there are common characters between the games that make cameo appearances in later titles. You wont miss any important story, at most a couple of injokes.

I can acknowledge that not every has 100 hours to devote to a single game (especially one without a multiplayer component) so its insane to tell someone to play every single game in the series right off the bat. If they enjoy 1 of them and are ready to call in for maternity leave then I don't see any hard in recommending the others in the series.
