im thinking of getting a PS3, but im not sure if i should get a fat or slim. i personally like the look of the fat..but from user's experience which one would u prefer? eg overheating problems from long durations of use. etc. i heard the slim is meant to be more power efficient.. but i have a friend that said when he removes a disc from the slim is hotter than a disc removed from a fat.
Suggestions?
Thanks

In all sense you shouldn't really worry about the difference between the two other than the fact they both look different and one is smaller. So I'd say choose which one you think looks better.
But if you want features, choose the Phat. Some advantages include the ability to install Linux, a complete power off switch at the back and touch sensitive power on and eject buttons in the front. However if you are in the market for the original 60gb phats you will get more features such as the 6 in 1 memory card reader, two extra usb slots, PS2 playback and a shiny reflective front lining instead of a silver embossed front.
The slim basically loses all the features mentioned above but with it comes a smaller size, the ability to use Bravia-Sync via HDMI and power efficiency. Your friend has noticed that the disc from the slim is hotter than the phat because the Slim consoles heat sinks are closer to the Disc drive, the Phat has the heat sinks at the bottom (the squarish bit where the PS3 sits on) away from the components. The slim is cooler but heat is more noticeable because of its smaller size.
Many people report that the Slim is more reliable with the Phats dying with the new updates. But I think this is simply a coincidence given the age of most consoles. Personally I use a launch 60gb model that is made in Japan, the other consoles that procede the launch consoles are made in China.

thanks. so pretty much it comes down to personal preference because everything else is pretty much the same except the look. would you say the slim is probably more reliable with its life span as well? i dont want to have too many problems in the future. i might use it for streaming things from the computer.. so it might be on for prolonged periods of times ... theoretically on for 12hrs + shouldn't be a problem? want to get ti right because as a student this is considered quite a big purchase for me

I would say if anything, the slim would have greater danger of overheating because the fan/cooling system has been severely reduced in the slim version.

Like I said before, news of Phat consoles dying as of lately is probably coincidental considering by now most users have owned them for about 3-2yrs now and it has only in the last 2 yrs have we seen truly addictive games that make users play 10+ hours straight everyday. So I think it is not necessary to consider the Slim because of fears of the Phat being unreliable, but obviously given its size and the amount of heat grills it is more susceptible to attracting dust which is probably the biggest killer of all consoles.
As hotmustard has said the Slim now has a reduced cooling system. Basically the Phat had two fans, one for the CPU and one for the GPU and also has a huge m'f***** heat sink. The slim reduces the fans using a combined GPU/CPU fan that spins slower than the Phat to make it more quiet.
So the Phat should technically be cooler.

I would go Fat (I know i did), They look nice, are cheeper (by over a $100) and you can LEGALY put a 500gb + Harddrive in it for less then $90. Changing the HDD is easy and Sony dont void your warenty (infact the instructions are in the manual!) . They thing that sh!ts me is that both of them dont have USB in the back.. which means I have to plug my playTV and Headset in the front. Which looks messy .

We have had both in our house at some point & I prefer my Phat, which I have upgraded the HD on. It does look nicer ( I think anyway) and even when I had a slim here I did not use the Bravia sync thingy much. I do think it is a little bit louder, but not too much. Our Phat is still going strong and has now had 2 years of pretty constant bashing as the main game / blue ray / general media centre in the house
