To post onto the shoutbox from my twitter account, do i start my tweet with @ecogamer or #ecogamer

ecogamer anywhere in a tweet will get picked up by the shoutbox, actually.

but there are a few behaviours with twitter that you should be aware of:

* using #ecogamer will make it easier to search for tweets posted from the main site (since the main site forces the user to add #ecogamer to the tweet)

* using @ecogamer will create a link to the main Ecogamer twitter account. anyone who's following your twitter account will be able to click through to it. advertising - yay!

* using @ecogamer at the start of your tweet will do the same as above, but people who are following your twitter account will only see the tweet if they are also following the Ecogamer twitter account. good if you have followers that you don't want to spam with ecogamer-related posts.

Generic Login seems to be buggered (for me at least)
Would you be able to tell me what browser you are using and what version it is so I can look into it?

Hi Anthony - I'm on FireFox version 3 if that helps.

It won't log me onto the generic account when I click the link - in fact it does nothing.

Which version of Firefox 3 though? It could possibly be your antivirus or some kind of javascript blocker doing it too.

3.0.19 (and it's work so can't update)

Not to worry though - I'll just use Chrome or my own Twitter account.

Hi guys, I do like the new bargain chat.  One thing that could help with the readability problems that some are having (if it can be implemented) is to drop the ecogamer tag when it appears in the bargain chat on the site, if it appears at the start or end of the message.  Or, if the message has been entered using the generic submission, ditch the EconomicalGamer from the start and start it with the username.

(This is just for its appearance in the Bargain Chat box on the site: obviously you can't do anything about the actual tweets floating about in the twitterverse)

For example, rather than the following appearing in the Bargain Chat box:

EconomicalGamer  mmmmmmm: #ecogamer  @dishwasher, hell yes! Finished the Jap version and am looking forward to the uncut english version.

the message would be more readable if the following appeared, by dropping out EconomicalGamer when submitting via the generic submission and dropping #ecogamer from the start of the message:

mmmmmmm: @dishwasher, hell yes! Finished the Jap version and am looking forward to the uncut english version.

If the tag isn't at the start or end, you'd want to leave it in as it's part of the sentence, eg:

EconomicalGamer  clawster: post #ecogamer  twitter-chat feedback here http://is.gd/cwd8Q

But looking at the history of the tag on twitter, whenever it's at the start or end it's just there as a tag (not part of the sentence), which if fine for normal tweet usage but in the Bargain Chat box itself becomes redundant.  (This won't always be the case, but it is for the majority I've looked at).

I don't know if we have the means to do it, but it could help (again, I much prefer the new twitter-based bargain chat, just thought that if you're having problems with uptake that this could help).

Having a bit of a play around,  I think the twitter login auto populates my EG user/password where my twitter ones are different, and required to log the tweet?

While I have no problem at all with the change to Twitter, something desperately needs to be done with the readability of the box on the front page. It looks terrible and is painful to read with all that messed up.. everything.

JustMan75 pretty much spells it out.

Nice idea. Its possible to do but it may take a little time before I get around to doing it. The next batch of free time I have to spend on the site will probably be on an article about what Twitter can actually do with Bargain Chat. It appears some people have no interest in investigating Twitter or how the new chat is actually better than before. So to keep it from dying it might be important for me to show people why its better.

Thanks for the article explaining the advantages of twitter as the new method of the shoutbox.

one thing though; judging by some of the comments on the article people don't seem to realise that you can just follow the links from the main page and use a generic login without having to log in to twitter (or without having to even creat a twitter account).

Not sure how best to promote that fact.

Thanks for the support. I got the same feeling as well. A lot of people just see the name Twitter and complain first, without taking any time to actually realise what has been done. Anyway, I have a plan to do something else which should make everyone happy without compromising the move onto Twitter.
