Borderlands - The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned Print
Features - Feature Articles
Written by Anthony

If you hadn't had your fix of zombie massacres from the myriad of shooters that now contain undead, then The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned downloadable content for Borderlands offers you the opportunity to explode brains using your unique arsenal collected through the core Borderlands game. The gritty and disorderly nature of Jacob's Cove, its few inhabitants and all the zombies is the perfect setting for the game's sense of humour and makes for an entertaining downloadable episode.

You can access the content at any point after unlocking instant travel, which will be important to anyone who has not finished the game or is on a second play through. To accommodate this, the level of the enemies will scale depending on your progress in the game. The zombies are an entirely new type of enemy which are immune to corrosive damage and can hinder your mobility and vision with vomit. There's a number of fun new bosses and special enemies including the hulking suicide zombie that can't wait to throw his explosive barrel at you. Unfortunately for me. upon first entering Jacob's Cove half my arsenal was made up of corrosive weapons.

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a fully realised expansion to Borderlands with a self contained story as to avoid conflicts with your progression in the main game. There is an outbreak of zombies in Jacob's Cove, a mining town for Jacobs Corporation and the resident doctor, Dr Ned (who feels compelled to remind you that he is not his brother Dr Zed) and a seedy Claptrap unit appear to be the only remaining sane inhabitants. There's lots of new and funny dialogue accompanying familiar mission structure, that will eventually unfold into the story behind why the dead are walking, and why the Wareskag has a hat.

One unfortunate situation I encountered is the nature of most paid DLC, which is that far too few people own the content. As of writing I have not been able to play this content online with anyone else. Borderlands is a great solo and shared experience, but not being able to play with others was disappointing and I do hope I'll get the multiplayer experience some time in the future.

Jacob's Cove is as large as any main area from the original game and visually very distinct from the wastelands of Pandora. If you've played Borderlands there isn't really much more to say. You won't find any game changing or enhancing missions, instead what is awaiting you are some new locations, enemies and story. If you want more Borderlands then The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is sufficiently large and entertaining to be worth your while.
